Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) organized another Future Himalayan Research Seminar Series on 10 March 2022. Mrs. Rachana Upadhyaya, Ph.D. Scholar, at the University of Bristol, U.K presented some of the interesting findings from her ongoing research “Understanding Vulnerabilities through Intersectional Lens in Khokana”.
Taking intersectionality approach, Mrs. Upadhyaya outlined how vulnerability changes according to context (time and space) and hence cannot be encapsulated under a static and monolithic socio-demographic category. Particularly, she highlighted that the use of the intersectional lens allows us to understand vulnerability as the result of different and interdependent societal stratification processes that result in multiple dimensions of marginalization. Her presentation was followed by an interactive and insightful discussion session. The discussion focused on the theoretical advancement by juxtaposing the concepts of intersectionality and vulnerability, policy contributions of her ongoing research, and areas that need critical attention to address and overcome the methodological challenges.
