Mr. Jiwak Raj Bajracharya a doctoral student in “Educational Technology” at the International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo delivered the Policy Discussion Series-XXIII on “Open and Distance Learning: Quality Issue for Enhancing Higher Education in Nepal”.
About the Series: The Policy Discussion Series is an initiative of Martin Chautari and the Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) under the aegis of Nepal Policy Research Network (NPRN). It aims to nurture a “community of practice” around public policy in Nepal, by bringing together experienced and emerging public policy scholars and practitioners to share their research insights and experiences with a larger audience. With this Series, we seek to stimulate debates on contemporary public policy issues, policy research methodologies, and institutions that create policy knowledge. The Series is also a forum for the sharing of findings of policy‐related research.
Open and Distance Learning: Quality Issue for Enhancing Higher Education in Nepal
Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to show the impact of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) on Higher Education (HE) in Nepal. This talk begins with the background of ODL; states the recent policies, practices and challenges; and rigorously discusses the quality issue to enhance the HE. This presentation suggests that an alternative approach should be applied to enhance the HE. Although, Nepal does have some ODL institutions; there is still a lack of trust in ODL in the HE community. Hence a formal Quality Assurance (QA) policy framework and QA standards needed to be studied and prepared before its wider implementation. Finally, this talk proposes a QA standard model for ODL in the context of Nepal.
