Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) is a Kathmandu-based research institute. SIAS aims to utilize its research to create state-of-the-art knowledge on environmental, socio-economic and political issues in the South Asian region to understand and influence policy challenges and sustainable development. SIAS invites applications from highly motivated, proactive and committed candidates for the position of Research Intern. The purpose of this position is to train and develop an intern on the research process, writing and managerial roles.

Major Responsibilities

  • Review relevant literature and policy documents and archive for research purposes.
  • Coordinate events organized by SIAS and actively participate in relevant forums.
  • Engage in field work as required, prepare notes and transcribe interviews.
  • Translate documents and contribute to analysis and write-up from field data.
  • Produce and contribute to reports, media materials, blogs, and other publications.
  • Edit knowledge products of SIAS and contribute to their documentation.
  • Carry other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Duration and duty station

It is a Kathmandu-based position and requires frequent field visits. This position is until March 2024 (including 3 months probationary period) with the possibility of an extension based on performance, requirements of SIAS, and availability of funds.

Qualifications and skills

  • Master’s degree in Urban Studies, Development Studies, Geography, Disaster Studies, Urban Anthropology/Sociology or any relevant field with areas of interest in urban issues, informality, urban political economy, DRR&M, risk resilience etc.
  • Experience in conducting qualitative research and data analysis.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English and Nepali.
  • Ability to deliver assigned tasks with minimal supervision, including strong time management, computer and communication skills.

Salary

This is a paid position. Salary and other benefits will be based on the competency of the candidate demonstrated during the selection process.
