Vacancy Announcement: Research Officer

Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) is a Kathmandu-based research institute. SIAS aims to utilize its research to create state-of-the-art knowledge on environmental, socio-economic and political issues in the South Asian region to understand and influence policy challenges and sustainable development. SIAS invites applications from highly motivated, proactive and committed candidates for the position of ‘Research Officer’.  

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Undertake qualitative fieldwork and data analysis in coordination with the research team focused on water and other natural resource governance, gendered livelihoods, local knowledge and climate adaptation, and migration.
  • Liaise with the research team and relevant actors and coordinate multi-stakeholder engagement workshops and similar action research initiatives and document the process.
  • Prepare field notes, event reports, and systematically analyze and archive project-related information.
  • Review project-relevant literature, policy documents, and produce and contribute to project reports, academic publications, media materials, policy briefs, and alike.
  • Contribute to strengthening the research and policy engagement profile of the organization.

Duration and duty station: It is a Kathmandu-based position with substantive field engagements. The position is initially for 1 year with a probation period of 3 months. Extension of the contract will be based on performance.

Qualifications and skills

  • Master’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Sociology, Developmental Studies, Geography, or any relevant field with at least 1 year of working experience in research.
  • Prior work experience and interest in driving field activities, coordinating with stakeholders, and organizing multi-stakeholder workshops.
  • Proven skills in research, analysis and writing academic, policy-oriented and media articles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Nepali.
  • Ability to deliver assigned tasks with minimal supervision, including strong time management, computer and communication skills.
