On August 27, 2023, Southasia Institute of Advance Studies (SIAS) together with NIMS College organized the fifth series of the Advanced Scientific Writing Workshop. Dr. Anushiya Shrestha, Research Director at SIAS, led the event and shared valuable insights and strategies for effective reference management. Dr. Shrestha’s presentation emphasized the significance of referencing and stressed the importance of properly citing sources to acknowledge the work of others. Participants were made aware that failure to do so could be considered plagiarism, and they were encouraged to avoid unintentional plagiarism. The presentation covered different types of referencing styles such as Harvard and Chicago and provided guidance on how to select the appropriate style. Examples were given to illustrate how to cite different types of sources, including books, journal articles, and websites. In addition, examples were given to show participants how to create a reference list and use in-text citations using reference management software such as EndNote.
During the discussion session, participants shared their practical challenges in writing journal articles, and Dr. Shrestha provided helpful tips to overcome these challenges. The session fostered a synergistic environment, allowing participants to share their expertise and address any confusion regarding citations and references in relation to journals and research papers.
