Project Partners: Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) & Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU)
Funder: Swedish Research Council via SLU
Duration: 2024-2027
Project Description:
The project entitled ‘Building synergies between biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and rural prosperity through community forest governance’ (ComPlant) explores how national and sub-national (provincial) level policy efforts in Nepal shape local influence in restoration planning and how different local governance condition (the community forestry governance in particular) impact community livelihoods, carbon sequestration and biodiversity. It is a collaborative research project with The Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU), South Asia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) and Ashoka University (India) will jointly undertake research in the mid-hills of Nepal and Himachal Pradesh, India. It helps understand (and analyse) how different historical and institutional dimensions of forest governance influence large-scale tree planting activities. The research will contribute to link broader environmental priorities with local societal objectives that potentially support people’s need, interest and wellbeing. The work of this kind will generate evidence on the interrelationship between environmental priorities and multiple dimensions of people’s wellbeing. The project is led by Dr. Harry Fischer from SLU with Dr. Dil Khatri at SIAS and Dr. Meghna Agarwala at Ashoka University.
