Shyam Basnet, PhD, is a Researcher at International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria. Mr. Basnet received his PhD on modelling of farmers’ responses to farm structural changes, technology adoption and policy intervention from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden. In his PhD research, he analyzed the wealth effect of the direct payment under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU. He was also engaged in analyzing the farm structural change from conventional to organic farming in the EU context. He obtained Master Degree from Wageningen University, The Netherlands, and worked in International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT)-India. During his tenure in CIMMYT, he was involved in assessing the impact of resource conservation technologies (e.g. Zero tillage) in agricultural productivity in selected areas of India and Nepal. Prior to his master degree, he worked in Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN) as a Project Coordinator in Sankhuwasava focusing on o
His areas of research interest lies on modeling of agricultural farm practices with the help of Econometric and Mathematical Programming tools. During his PhD research, he gained experience of utilizing the Positive Mathematical Programming (PMP) model in Bayesian framework. Currently, he is extending the application of PMP approach in modelling land-use change patterns. Besides, Mr. Basnet is also involved in teaching a Bachelor-level Course on Econometrics and Mathematical Programming in SLU, Sweden. He is deeply interested in understanding farming practices in Nepal and South Asia region and continue his research in agricultural policy analysis.
