Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) Nepal and the University of Edinburgh (UoE) Scotland (U.K.) organized a 3rd batch of field course from April 8-21, 2023. Research professionals and government officials gave presentations on the theme related to natural resource management, community forestry, protected area management, water management, women’s empowerment, and livelihoods in Nepal. In addition to the presentations, students participated in field visits and observations in Pokhara, Dhulikhel, and Kathmandu. During the second week of the field course, students participated in group projects where they conducted fieldwork and data analysis and presented their findings to researchers from SIAS and UoE faculty. Students also had the opportunity to share their culture with local people and experience rural living conditions with a host family at a homestay in Lwang, Pokhara.
This field course provided a unique opportunity for Master’s students to gain first-hand experience of the challenges associated with environmental and development issues in Nepal, as well as the efforts of professionals and community members in Nepal to address these challenges. This field course was attended by 25 Master’s students and 4 faculty members from the Environment and Development program at the University of Edinburgh (UK).
SIAS has been coordinating a two-week field course for master’s students since 2019 with the aim of advancing joint research and academic exchange as well as promoting joint publications.
