Transcending Techno-centric Approaches and Enhancing Productive Use of Solar Powered Irrigation

On June 28, 2024, Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) hosted another series of Future Himalayan Research Seminars on, “Transcending Techno-centric Approaches and Enhancing Productive Use of Solar Powered Irrigation“. Dr. Anushiya Shrestha from SIAS facilitated the seminar, commencing with brief welcome remarks and an introduction of the presenter. Next was a short self-introduction by the participants.

Following the introduction, Dr. Netra Chhetri, Professor at the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, Arizona State University, delivered a comprehensive presentation. Prof. Dr. Chhetri explained his research findings on improving the productive use of solar irrigation in the rural areas of Nepal. Prof. Dr. Chhetri shared some strategies to optimize the energy generated through solar powered irrigation (SPI) with the aim of improving its utilization beyond irrigation and maximize the productive use of energy. He emphasized that SPI could also serve as a viable strategy for both climate change mitigation and adaptation. In addition, Prof. Dr. Chhetri presented some successful cases of community-based solar powered irrigation systems.

An insightful and interactive discussion followed Prof. Dr. Chhetri’s presentation. The discussion highlighted the need to transcend the technology-centric approach for making optimal use of the generated solar energy and enhancing livelihood opportunities for the farmers. The participants emphasized the importance of integrating social science research and promoting socio-technical approaches to solve complex problems.
